New York City is home to some of the world’s best restaurants, but sometimes you just want to get away. Introducing Day Tripping, a weekly summertime column in which Eater highlights the restaurants that are just a short drive or train-ride away and are worth the trip. Time to pack your bags. And as always, if you have a place you’d like to see featured in a future Day Tripping, feel free to share in the comments.

In this week’s edition of Day Tripping, Team Eater heads to Westport, CT to check out Tarry Lodge, the newest venture from Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich.

From the packed-to-the-gills Eataly to the always-fully-booked Del Posto, team Batali-Bastianich own some of New York’s hottest spots. They’re hard enough to get into as is, but thanks to summer’s glorious weather, the tourists have taken over and now you may never get a reservation. So what is a city-dweller to do? Take a day trip to Westport, CT, of course.

Tarry Lodge, the newest restaurant from Batali and Bastianich, opened in 2011 in Westport, a beach town located about an hour outside the city (by train or car). If you take Metro-North, the restaurant is just a two minute walk from the station so no need to worry about finding a cab.

The new Enoteca Pizzeria seats about 80 people. If you can, grab a seat at the bar facing the pizza oven and watch as the pizza maestro, Mario La Posta (who proved his worth as the chef of Tarry Lodge’s sister restaurant of the same name in Port Chester, NY), makes your pizza. The wine list is solid – stocked with regional Italian wines available by the glass or bottle. The menu is extensive with dishes like pork belly with apple mostarda, quail with delicata squash & pomegranates, and the traditional Bucatini All’Amatriciana. Batali’s creative and flavorful pizzas have a grand presence in the middle of the menu with toppings including black truffles and egg, jalapeno and fontina, brussel sprouts with chili and pancetta.

So when you’re looking for your Batali fix this summer and need a break from the crowds of New York, take a trip to Tarry Lodge. Whether it’s just a day trip to sample the food or a weekend getaway filled with pizza, wine, and some beach time, it’s worth the trip.
